Yes, storms can cause house fires even when there's no lightning.
Let me explain.
Living in the DFW Metroplex, we are used to a lot of heavy storms and, while most homeowners worry about lightning, there are a couple of other ways storms can cause house fires.
Hail
Hail will punch numerous tiny, almost invisible holes in your roof shingles which can then leak water through your roof and down into your home.
If this leak comes into contact with your electricity wiring, it can cause a fire to start. This leak may not be visible, especially if the water is dripping inside your drywall.
Strong Winds
Again, in DFW Metroplex, we are used to violent storms and in heavy rain, strong winds can actually blow the rainwater upwards under your shingles and into your attic space and down into your home.
A strong acrid smell (a bit like burning rubber)is normally the only clue that this is happening in your home and needs to be investigated quickly.
To guard against fires you must get your roof inspected and your attic checked regularly.
